In January and February of 2006, he played in different tournaments to display his skill and to acquire some money for his family's expenses enough for the whole year. Experts coined it, "running good", where Michael in his two specific months played at the top of his ability and gave a flawless poker performance. As with any other years when he started to play poker, 2006 is no different.
He's goal of qualifying in Player of the year started as early as January of 2006 when he managed to accumulate points to place second in the World Poker Open. As the competition in poker starts to grind Michael's ability seriously, a new threat of a professional poker player arrived in the name of Nam Le, a close friend of Michael who was able to capture the Bay 101 Shooting Star Championship. However, the month of April somehow blessed Michael as he finishes high in the World Series Poker Tournament Circuit and the Mirage Poker Showdown and winning in the Mandalay Bay Poker Championship. This added to his points and eventually earns him the lead.
July came and Michael Mizrachi experienced his down sides as a poker player. He got a 1,500 US dollars pot-limit hold'em event that made him finish as the 54th placer earning him no points in the Player of the Year Award. Eager to redeem himself in the zero points he got, August came and he won the Bellagio II Cup Tournament, a major game where he managed to outwit a 462-player field. This win is the major win he got in the past six months playing poker and gave him 960 points for the award.
